Recovering Metal From Uneven Scrap

Uneven steel scrap, DRI and sponge iron behave differently in the furnace. Reducing them to a consistent size makes recovery predictable.

01

The problem

Mixed, uneven scrap charges unevenly — some pieces melt fast, some sit and resist, and the result is unpredictable recovery and wasted energy working around the inconsistency.

02

Engineering insight

This was the specific problem Dr. G. L. Grover researched before VMPL existed: how to process uneven steel scrap, DRI and sponge iron for billet casting, so the material converts predictably into TMT bars and structural sections.

Consistency of input size is what makes melt behaviour predictable — not the tonnage of any single machine.

03

VMPL's approach

The shredder range — impact hammer type, double shaft, and alligator shear for precision shape cutting — reduces mixed scrap to a size the furnace can charge consistently.

Where only shape-cutting is needed rather than full size reduction, the alligator and continuous shears are supplied on their own.
